Owl Pellet Workshop

22 February 2025

10.30am - 1.00pm

£40 per person

Tutors: Steve Kirk & Suzanne Kynaston

Discover the fascinating reason why owls produce pellets and learn how to collect them for study. In this hands-on course, you’ll practice dissecting owl pellets to uncover and identify skeletal remains of small mammals.

Find out more about small mammal skeletal anatomy and reveal ecosystem composition courtesy of owl pellet biology. Your findings could also contribute to two important national projects led by the Mammal Society: the National Harvest Mouse Survey and the ‘Searching for Shrews’ project.

The recent discovery of the invasive Greater White-toothed Shrew (GWTS) in Sunderland, a species known to threaten the native pygmy shrew in the British Isles, makes this research more relevant than ever. All records from your analysis will be submitted to the Mammal Society, helping to advance these critical conservation efforts.

Limited spaces available.
