Soay Sheep

Ovis aries

Soay sheep are a small primitive breed of domestic sheep that are descended from a population of feral sheep on the 259 acre island of Soay, in the St Kilda Archipelago, about 65km from the Western Isles of Scotland. They are undiluted by interbreeding, so represent a unique example of the neolithic origins of domesticated sheep. They are very hardy, less troubled by parasites, foot rot and other ailments that commonly afflict their more modern descendants.
