Otter

Lutra lutra

The otter is a member of the weasel family (Mustelid) and lives in lakes, streams and rivers around the UK. It is endangered, but its populations are recovering after almost reaching extinction from absorbing the poisonous weed killer DDT from the animals it ate. It is about the size of a domestic cat, but longer and lower to the ground, with a long body and tail and small legs with webbed feet. It has brown fur with a white underbelly, small rounded ears and a pointed face. It is an excellent swimmer, and will play in the water, looping and diving for fun! It eats fish which it catches then brings back to land to eat. A family of otters will live in a den at the water's edge. Otters are not able to swim when they are born, and have to be taught.
