Help us give Mish & Lucy a better future

Can you help the unluckiest bear cubs in the world?

Two orphaned bear cubs abandoned in the mountains, lost and alone, urgently need your help to give them a home. Please donate now to give these bears the help they so desperately need.

There is hope for the two bear cubs who were discovered abandoned in a snow drift high in the Albanian mountains. With their mother gone and the cubs’ condition quickly deteriorating, as well as the risk of poachers and predators, rescuers feared for the cubs lives. They needed immediate help, but after multiple attempts to reintroduce them failed, the race was on to find them a home, somewhere they could be happy and lead a natural life.

As international experts in rescuing and caring for bears, after our previous rescue of the Bulgarian brown bears Fluff and Scruff from a canned hunting facility, Wildwood can give them the best possible home; somewhere they can be safe and loved.

Wildwood needs your help to give Mish and Lucy a forever home, and give them a chance of a happy, healthy future! Without this rescue work the cubs would have died alone, with their mother gone and unable to fend for themselves.

With your help, we know that Wildwood can make Mish and Lucy the luckiest bear cubs in the world!

How you can help...

A lot of work has already been done by a small dedicated team of people, determined to give Mish and Lucy a second chance. You can now join the team, help us to complete their rescue by bringing them safely to their forever home and giving them an amazing future at Wildwood.

There are several ways you can help:

Make a donation

100% of donations to the rescue fund will be put towards ensuring that Mish and Lucy get here safe and sound. Your gift will allow us to provide them with the best possible forever home and will also help towards their continued care and enrichment.

You can donate by credit/debit card online here or call 01227 712111 (Mon-Fri during office hours 9am-5pm).

Alternatively, you can post a cheque made payable to 'Wildwood Trust' and send it to: Wildwood Trust, Herne Common, Herne Bay, Kent, CT6 7LQ, please don't forget to let us know your donation is for the bear appeal. You can also make a cash donation when you visit either of our parks.

It doesn’t matter how much or little you can spare, every penny donated will make a difference. Together we can give Mish and Lucy the best future possible!

The story of Mish and Lucy

Wildwood have recently discovered the full story and the extreme efforts that so many people from organisations including AWRT, Bears in mind and the FourPaws Albania have gone to, just to ensure the cubs not only survived, but could have the best future possible.

The cubs were first discovered on the side of a mountain within a snow drift and their mother was nowhere to be seen. It is thought that the family were perhap frightened by dogs or illegal logging activities that caused them to flee the safety of their forest not long after waking up from hibernation.

Their rescuers believe the disturbance caused them to go much higher into the mountains than they usually would. The bear cubs would have been too small and unable to follow their mother across the extremely steep and snowy incline in this area, so awaited her return in a snow drift at the bottom, luckily this was very close to an access road otherwise they may never have been found!

When their rescuers first discovered them, they were reluctant to intervene in case their mother came back to look for them. They monitored them at a safe distance to ensure the cubs were not taken by poachers or attacked by predators. The rescuers made several attempts to reunite the cubs with their mother, they even searched the area to try and find their original den, but unfortunately, she couldn't be found.

As their mother hadn’t returned and the cubs’ condition was fast deteriorating, it was decided it would be in their best interests to remove them and to provide veterinary care. Otherwise the cubs could have frozen to death in the harsh winter weather.

The bears now urgently needed a temporary home, ideally a rehabilitation centre where they could learn how to survive in the wild and enable them to return to their forest home.

Bears in Mind and AWRT attempted to get the bears released back into the wild twice but unfortunately both of those efforts failed.  The rescuers were running out of places to turn and, despite their best efforts, the cubs were now too old and too used to people to be successfully released back into the wild.  They now needed a forever home.

AWRT in collaboration with Tirana Zoo in Albania stepped in to help, assisted by Bears in Mind to arrange the next stage of their journey. The bear cubs are now being housed in a temporary holding facility in Belgium at Natuurhulpcentrum. What was needed now was a permanent sanctuary to give them the best possible future.

Thanks to Wildwood’s international reputation for rescuing and rehabilitating bears, we were asked if we could help. We were approached in the hope that we might be able to provide the orphans with the second chance they so desperately needed. Of course, we said yes!

Now we need your help to bring them safely to their forever home

Their current enclosure in Belgium is only temporary, it is not suitable long term for the orphans to express a full range of natural behaviour and they will soon outgrow it. To avoid future health issues, Mish and Lucy must be transferred to a permanent, more suitable home urgently and it is vital that we bring them to their new forever home before winter sets in.

At our park in East Devon, work has already begun preparing a natural woodland home, where Mish and Lucy will be able to live full and happy lives.

Because of the Corona virus pandemic, building their forever home is going to take longer and be more complicated to build. This means that Mish and Lucy will be coming to the Kent park for a few months to get them settled in, while we make sure their Devon forever home can be everything it needs to be.

But we can't do it alone and we need your help today!

Their new home will be a huge natural woodland, Mish and Lucy will have a rich, stimulating, diverse environment where they’ll be able to explore, forage, play and have the space to develop a full range of natural behaviours enabling them to grow into happy, healthy adult bears.

Please donate today and together we can make Mish and Lucy the luckiest bear cubs in the world

If we exceed our target, any additional donations willl be put towards protecting, conserving and rewilding British wildlife. As a charity, Wildwood Trust relies on generous donations and legacies from members of the public. Without the support of yourself and others like you, we would simply not be able to continue our work to protect British wildlife for future generations.

Wildwood Trust would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped with the rescue so far and for taking great care of Mish and Lucy while we build their new home.
